What happens during a home Study?

Your licensing specialist will spend time getting to know you and your family.

- Why you’re interested in foster care
- How your family handles stress and conflict
These conversations help your licensing specialist understand your family’s story and identify areas where additional training or support may be helpful.
Home safety assessment
Yes, someone will visit your home—but they aren’t looking for perfection. It’s okay if toys are on the floor or if the baseboards haven’t been dusted since Thanksgiving (we won’t check, we promise).
Instead, a home study is about making sure your home is safe for children.
This may include checking for:
- Working smoke detectors
- Safe storage of medications and firearms
- Adequate sleeping arrangements
- General home safety
- Emergency plans
Most recommendations are simple and easily addressed before licensing is complete.

No one begins the foster care journey as an expert. We don’t expect you to know everything, or anything!
That’s why training, support, and ongoing guidance are all part of becoming a foster parent.
How long does a home study take?
The timeline varies depending on how quickly paperwork, training, and interviews are completed.
For most families, the home study is completed as part of the overall foster parent licensing process. We start this process from the time you begin training. The quicker you do your home study, the quicker you will be licensed.
Typically, we can get your home study approval and licensing paperwork sent in within six weeks of completing your training.
How to prepare
You don’t need to stress over every detail before your first visit.
Instead, focus on:
- Completing requested paperwork promptly.
- Asking questions when you’re unsure.
- Making your home safe for children.
- Being honest during interviews.
- Keeping an open mind as you learn.
