Let’s start with the short answer. Most families can become licensed foster parents in Nebraska in about 4-5 months, including training. The exact timeline depends on how quickly you complete each step of the licensing process and how soon required paperwork and background checks are completed.

Each step is designed to prepare you to provide a safe, stable, and nurturing home for a child who has experienced trauma.

Step 1: Pray and learn about foster care

Every foster care journey starts with prayer. Wondering if God has called you to care for a child in foster care? Talk to him about it. We’d love to pray with you as you discern his direction.

We also encourage you to learn. At Christian Heritage, we invite prospective foster parents to attend Foster Stories, a relaxed informational gathering where you’ll hear real stories from foster families, learn how the licensing process works, and have the opportunity to ask questions.

Many people discover that foster care is different than they expected—and that they may be more prepared than they realized.

Step 2: Reach out to us

Once you’ve decided to move forward, reach out to us and we’ll begin the interview process. This is less formal than you might expect!

This step includes sharing basic information about your household, family members, and background. It’s a chance for you to tell us about your heart for vulnerable children. Our recruiter will guide that conversation and also give you the chance to ask any questions you have about the process.

Step 3: Register for and attend foster parent

training

Training equips prospective foster parents with the knowledge and skills they’ll need to care for children who have experienced abuse, neglect, loss, and trauma.

Topics often include:

• Understanding trauma and attachment
• Child development
• Positive behavior strategies
• Working with biological families
• Navigating the child welfare system

Rather than simply checking a box, training helps build confidence before your first placement. Our training class is only 10 weeks long and entirely on Zoom.

Step 4: Background checks

Nebraska requires background checks for all adults living in the home. Sometimes this is the part of the process that can take the longest depending on where you have lived.

These checks help ensure that children entering foster care are placed in safe environments. While paperwork isn’t the most exciting part of the journey, it’s an important safeguard for vulnerable children.

Step 5: Complete your home study

The home study is one of the most misunderstood parts of becoming a foster parent.

Many people worry that someone is coming to judge their home or determine whether they’re “good enough.” Not at all!

In reality, the home study is a collaborative process. Your licensing specialist wants to get to know your family, understand your strengths, and ensure your home provides a safe environment for children.

You don’t need a perfect house or a perfect family. Children need caring adults who are willing to learn, grow, and provide consistency.

Step 6: Receive your foster care license

Once your training, paperwork, background checks, and home study are complete, Nebraska will issue your foster care license.

Congratulations—you are officially ready to welcome a child into your home.

How long until I can take a placement?

Receiving your license doesn’t always mean you’ll receive a placement immediately.

Some families receive a call within days, while others may wait several weeks or months. The timeline depends on factors such as:

• The ages of children you’re open to caring for
• Whether you’re open to sibling groups (this is a huge need)
• Medical or behavioral needs
• Current placement needs in your area

Your licensing specialist will help you understand what to expect based on your preferences and Nebraska’s current needs.

Why does the process take so long?

It’s natural to wish the process moved faster. The reality is that every step exists to prepare families for one of the most meaningful—and challenging—roles they may ever take on.

Children entering foster care have often experienced significant trauma and uncertainty. Preparing foster parents well helps create homes where children can begin to heal, grow, and experience stability.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s preparation.

That said, at Christian Heritage, we strive to create a seamless process. Typically, we can get a foster parent(s) through training and the home study/licensing process in about 16-18 weeks. That is actually very quick!
