When crisis came again, she knew where to turn

A couple of years ago, we shared about a mom who had just moved to Nebraska to escape an abusive relationship.

Her oldest daughter was in the hospital receiving treatment for a cancerous brain tumor, and her younger daughter—just an early grade-schooler—needed stability while Mom stayed by her sister’s bedside.

With no family or community nearby, the mom reached out to Christian Heritage thanks to the school counselor’s suggestion.

Two incredible volunteers—Evan and Alyssa—said “YES!” They opened their home and hearts, caring for the little girl during the week and surrounding her with love, laughter, and a sense of normalcy. They also cared deeply for Mom—checking in, praying, and simply listening as she navigated every parent’s nightmare.

Evan and Alyssa introduced the family to friends, took the little girl to church and activities, and helped Mom manage the overwhelming practical and emotional weight of her daughter’s illness.

When the school year ended, so did the official hosting. Later that summer, heartbreak followed—the oldest daughter lost her battle with cancer.

Even then, Evan and Alyssa stayed connected—inviting the mom and younger daughter to meals, outings, and trips to the zoo.

Eventually, contact faded, as often happens in grief.

Then, months later, the mom returned—standing at their door with her younger daughter, in the midst of a health crisis and unsure where else to turn.

Without hesitation, Evan and Alyssa said “YES!” again, caring for the child until her mom could safely bring her home.

What makes Families Together so powerful is that it’s not just a program. It’s people. The relationships formed don’t end when the “official hosting” does. They last. They heal. They remind parents in crisis that they are not alone—and that God, through His people, is ready and willing to show up again and again.

As this year comes to a close, will you give a gift to help more families experience that kind of safety, connection, and lasting hope in 2026?

Your generosity ensures that when the next mom’s world falls apart, someone will be ready to respond—with open arms and the love of Jesus.

Thank you for your partnership and continued support of this ministry. We couldn’t do this without you!

With gratitude and hope,

James
